14 × 7 as 10 × 7 plus 4 × 7: 70 + 28 = 98

The 14 times table up to 14 × 12

The 14 times table is 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, 84, 98, 112, 126, 140, 154, 168. It goes past the 12 × 12 multiplication chart, so most schools do not require it: the Common Core stops at one-digit facts and England at 12 × 12. It turns up in calendars (two weeks are 14 days) and in 4th and 5th grade long multiplication, and it is simply the 7 times table doubled. The chart above has every fact, and "Hide answers" turns it into a quick self-check.

Multiplication by 14 as 10 + 4

Split 14 into 10 and 4. Multiplication by 14 is then the 10 times table plus the 4 times table: 14 × 3 = 30 + 12 = 42; 14 × 9 = 90 + 36 = 126. There is a second way: 14 is double 7, so double the 7 times table. 7 × 8 = 56, and 56 doubled is 112, so 14 × 8 = 112.

Two weeks

A fortnight is 14 days, two weeks. "How many days are in 3 fortnights?" is 14 × 3 = 42. If a child reads 14 pages a day, a week of reading is 14 × 7 = 98 pages. Every answer in the 14 times table is even, because 14 is even.

14 times table games and worksheet

The trainer asks the 14 times table out of order with a keypad. The facts children mix up most are 14 × 7 = 98, 14 × 8 = 112 and 14 × 9 = 126 (96, 102 and 136 are the usual slips), so the game brings a missed fact back two or three questions later until it is right three times in a row. When the round feels easy, take the speed test and then the test for the diploma. The 14 times table worksheet prints 30 problems with the answer key on page 2, and the third sheet practices the trick.

A tip for parents

If the 7 times table is solid, the 14s are just doubling. Say the 7s fact first, then double it out loud: "7 × 6 = 42, double is 84". Ask the facts the other way round too: 7 × 14 is the same as 14 × 7.

Questions and answers

What is the trick for the 14 times table?

10 groups plus 4 groups, or double the 7 times table: 14 × 6 = 60 + 24 = 84.

What is 14 × 12?

Do kids need to learn the 14 times table?

Not for the Common Core or the England curriculum, which stop at 12 × 12. It is useful extra practice for long multiplication and mental math, and many families learn the tables up to 20.
