The 13 times table up to 13 × 12
The 13 times table is 13, 26, 39, 52, 65, 78, 91, 104, 117, 130, 143, 156. Some call it the 13 multiplication table; it is the same list. It goes past the 12 × 12 multiplication chart, so most schools do not require it: the Common Core stops at one-digit facts and England at 12 × 12. It is the first table after the 12 × 12 chart, so it is where many families start the tables up to 20, and it comes back in 4th and 5th grade long multiplication and mental math. The chart above has every fact, and "Hide answers" turns it into a quick self-check.
Multiplication by 13 as 10 + 3
Split 13 into 10 and 3. Multiplication by 13 is then the 10 times table plus the 3 times table: 13 × 4 = 40 + 12 = 52; 13 × 8 = 80 + 24 = 104. A child who knows the 3s can find every answer here, and the third worksheet practices exactly this split.
A baker's dozen and a pattern
A baker's dozen is 13: one extra roll on top of 12. "How many rolls are in 4 baker's dozens?" is 13 × 4 = 52. Now look at the last digits of 13, 26, 39, 52, 65, 78, 91, 104, 117, 130: 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0. Every digit shows up exactly once.
13 times table games and worksheet
The trainer asks the 13 times table out of order with a keypad. The facts children mix up most are 13 × 7 = 91, 13 × 8 = 104 and 13 × 9 = 117 (81, 114 and 107 are the usual slips), so the game brings a missed fact back two or three questions later until it is right three times in a row. When the round feels easy, take the speed test and then the test for the diploma. The 13 times table worksheet prints 30 problems with the answer key on page 2, and the third sheet practices the trick.
A tip for parents
The 3 times table does most of the work here. Before a round of 13s, ask a few 3s out of order: when 3 × 7 = 21 comes fast, 13 × 7 = 70 + 21 = 91 comes fast too. Ask the facts the other way round too: 7 × 13 is the same as 13 × 7.
Questions and answers
What is the trick for the 13 times table?
10 groups plus 3 groups: 13 × 6 = 60 + 18 = 78.
What is 13 × 7?
What is 13 × 12?
Do kids need to learn the 13 times table?
Not for the Common Core or the England curriculum, which stop at 12 × 12. It is useful extra practice for long multiplication and mental math, and many families learn the tables up to 20.
