The 5 times table: answers end in 5 or 0
The 5 times table is 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60. Look at the last digits: 5, 0, 5, 0. That pattern makes it one of the first tables children learn, together with the 2 and 10 times tables. In the US, counting by 5s is part of 2nd grade, and the full facts are expected by the end of 3rd grade; in England the 5 times table belongs to Year 2.
Multiplication by 5 using the 10 times table
Five is half of ten, so multiplication by 5 is half of multiplication by 10. 5 × 6: 10 × 6 = 60, half is 30. 5 × 12: 120, half is 60. This trick also works with big numbers later (5 × 48 = half of 480 = 240), which is why it is worth learning now instead of counting on fingers.
The clock connection
The minute numbers on a clock are the 5 times table: the hand on 3 means 15 minutes, on 9 means 45 minutes. Children who know their 5s read the clock faster, and the telling-time game builds on it.
5 times table games and printable worksheet
Begin with the trainer and its four answer buttons; the wrong choices are close (35 vs 30), so guessing doesn't work. Then try the speed test, where every right answer adds to the score and a wrong one costs three seconds: many children reach 25-30 correct answers in a minute on this table, a nice boost before the harder ones. Print the 5 times table worksheet (answers on page 2) or the counting-by-5s chart for younger children.
A tip for parents
Use coins: in the US a nickel is 5 cents, so "how much are 7 nickels?" is 7 × 5 = 35 cents. Real coins on the table make the fact something a child can count, check and then remember. In the UK the same game works with 5p coins: 9 coins of 5p make 45p.
Questions and answers
What is the trick for the 5 times table?
Times 10, then half: 5 × 7 = 70 ÷ 2 = 35. Answers always end in 5 or 0.
What is 5 × 12?
60, the number of minutes in an hour.
Which grade learns the 5 times table?
Usually 2nd or 3rd grade in the US and Year 2 in England.
Why does 5 times an odd number end in 5?
Because an odd number is an even number plus one: 5 × 7 = 5 × 6 + 5 = 30 + 5.
