Why mixed times tables practice matters

An online times tables quiz with all tables mixed is the real check. Knowing the 7 times table in order (7, 14, 21 …) is a first step. Knowing that 7 × 8 = 56 when it pops up between 3 × 9 and 12 × 4 is the real goal - that is how facts appear in long multiplication, division, fractions and tests. Mixed times tables practice shuffles all tables from 2 to 12 so a child cannot count up from the last answer. Choose the tables with the chips (for example 2, 5 and 10 only) and the round adapts.

Times tables speed test

The default game here is a 60-second speed test: answer as many facts as you can, a wrong answer costs three seconds, and a ghost bar shows your best score from this browser. Children compete with themselves, which keeps it fun for the slow starters too. For a calmer round, switch to the trainer (no timer) or the gates runner.

Practice for the Multiplication Tables Check

Pupils in England take the Multiplication Tables Check in Year 4: 25 questions from the tables up to 12 × 12, with 6 seconds for each. The "Times tables check" mode here uses the same rhythm, so the real check feels familiar. It is a practice round only; nothing is recorded or sent.

How to use the results

After every round the "work on these" list shows the facts that were wrong or slow, and the trainer can practice just those ("Practice my mistakes"). In most classes the same ten or so facts stay on that list longest, the ones in the box above. Print them as a worksheet, or print a mixed sheet with 50 problems and an answer key for homework. Three good speed tests in a row are a better sign of progress than one perfect round.

A tip for teachers

Use projector mode with Team A and Team B: the class calls out the number of the answer, and the score buttons keep track. A share link with the chosen tables lets pupils play the same mix at home.

Questions and answers

What are mixed times tables?

Facts from several tables in random order, for example 6 × 7, then 3 × 9, then 8 × 4. They show whether a child really knows the facts.

How many facts should my child get in a 60-second speed test?

It depends on age; compare with your child's own best score instead of a number. A rising best score is the goal.

When should my child start mixed tables?

When two or three single tables are secure. Start with mixed 2, 5 and 10, then add more.

Is the times tables check here the official MTC?

No. It is a practice round in the same rhythm (25 questions, 6 seconds each). The official check is taken at school.
