Division facts are times tables backwards

This division chart (or division table) lists the division facts, the basic divisions children learn by heart in 3rd grade: 20 ÷ 4 = 5, 42 ÷ 6 = 7, 81 ÷ 9 = 9. The chart above lists every fact from 1 ÷ 1 to 144 ÷ 12, one row per divisor. Each one comes from a times table: 42 ÷ 6 = 7 because 6 × 7 = 42. The Common Core asks children to know the multiplication and division facts within 100 from memory by the end of 3rd grade; in England pupils learn the division facts alongside each times table in Years 3 and 4.

How to learn the division facts

Start with the divisors that are easy in multiplication: ÷ 2, ÷ 5 and ÷ 10. Then ÷ 3, ÷ 4 and ÷ 8, and last ÷ 6, ÷ 7 and ÷ 9 - the same order as the times tables. Practice each one as a fact family: 4, 6 and 24 give 4 × 6, 6 × 4, 24 ÷ 4 and 24 ÷ 6. A child who learns families learns four facts at once.

Rules worth knowing

Any number divided by 1 is itself (9 ÷ 1 = 9). Any number divided by itself is 1 (9 ÷ 9 = 1). 0 divided by a number is 0 (0 ÷ 5 = 0). And you can't divide by 0: there is no number that times 0 gives 5.

Division facts games

The trainer asks the facts in random order with a keypad and shows a fact-family hint after a wrong answer. In memory pairs, "56 ÷ 8" matches "7". The speed test is the best fluency check: 60 seconds, a wrong answer costs three seconds, and the best score stays in this browser. When the facts of one divisor are secure, take the test and print the diploma, then choose the next divisor in the settings.

A tip for parents

Keep the times table chart next to the division chart for the first week. When your child is stuck on 54 ÷ 6, let them find 54 in row 6 of the times table. After a while they stop looking - that is the moment the facts are learned. Printed side by side, the two make a multiplication and division chart, and the division facts worksheet with a times tables sheet makes a set of multiplication and division worksheets.

Questions and answers

What are division facts?

Divisions that come from the times tables, like 35 ÷ 5 = 7 or 72 ÷ 9 = 8. Children learn them by heart in 3rd grade.

What is the fastest way to learn division facts?

Learn them as fact families with the times tables: 6 × 8 = 48 gives 48 ÷ 6 = 8 and 48 ÷ 8 = 6.

Why can't you divide by zero?

Because no number times 0 gives anything other than 0, so 5 ÷ 0 has no answer.

How many division facts are there to 12?

The chart has 144: twelve divisors with twelve facts each.
