The 12 times table, the last one
The 12 times table is 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96, 108, 120, 132, 144. It is the bottom row and the last column of the 12 × 12 multiplication chart (the 12 by 12 multiplication grid) and usually the last table a child learns. In England it is due by the end of Year 4; in the US the Common Core stops at one-digit facts, but many schools still teach "up to 12" because of dozens, inches and months.
Multiplication by 12 as 10 + 2
Split 12 into 10 and 2. Multiplication by 12 is then the 10 times table plus the 2 times table: 12 × 6 = 60 + 12 = 72; 12 × 8 = 80 + 16 = 96. A child who knows the 10s and the doubles can find every answer here, and the third worksheet practices exactly this split.
Where twelve shows up
There are 12 eggs in a dozen, 12 months in a year and 12 inches in a foot. "How many inches are in 3 feet?" is 12 × 3 = 36. And 12 × 12 = 144, the last square of the chart, is a fact children enjoy knowing.
12 times table games
The trainer asks the 12 times table, from 12 × 1 through 12 × 12, out of order with a keypad. The facts from 12 × 7 to 12 × 12 are three-digit or close to it, so they come back more often until they are right three times in a row. When the round feels easy, take the speed test and then the 12 times table quiz for the diploma. The 12 times table worksheet is a practice sheet of 30 problems with the answer key on page 2. To multiply any number by 12, use the trick below: 10 groups plus 2 groups.
A tip for parents
Ask the facts the other way round too: 7 × 12 is the same as 12 × 7. A child who knows the 7 times table already knows 84 - they just need to see it. Put the 12 times table next to the multiples chart above and color the facts that are already known from other tables; a child who knows the tables up to 11 has only 12 × 12 left.
