20 × 7: double 7 and add a zero, 140

The 20 times table up to 20 × 12

The 20 times table is 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200, 220, 240. It goes past the 12 × 12 multiplication chart, so most schools do not require it: the Common Core stops at one-digit facts and England at 12 × 12. It is the 2 times table with a zero on the end: the easiest of the big tables and a good one to finish the tables up to 20 with. The chart above has every fact, and "Hide answers" turns it into a quick self-check.

Multiplication by 20 as 2 × 10

20 is 2 × 10, so multiplication by 20 is two easy steps: double the number, then put a zero on the end. 20 × 3 = 60; 20 × 8 = 160; 20 × 11 = 220. This is also the step children need for the 19 and 18 times tables and for numbers like 20 × 35 later.

A score and twenty-dollar bills

A score is 20, as in "four score" (80). Five twenty-dollar bills are 20 × 5 = $100. Every answer in the 20 times table ends in 0, and the digit before it is even: 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120.

20 times table games and worksheet

The trainer asks the 20 times table out of order with a keypad. Mistakes in the 20 times table usually come from zeros, not from the facts: 20 × 10 is 200, not 2000, and 20 × 12 is 240, not 2040, so the game brings a missed fact back two or three questions later until it is right three times in a row. When the round feels easy, take the speed test and then the test for the diploma. The 20 times table worksheet prints 30 problems with the answer key on page 2, and the third sheet practices the trick.

A tip for parents

Ask the 2 times table first, then the same question with 20. A child who notices "it is the 2s with a zero" has learned the whole table in one go. Ask the facts the other way round too: 7 × 20 is the same as 20 × 7.

Do kids need to learn the 20 times table?

Not for the Common Core or the England curriculum, which stop at 12 × 12. It is useful extra practice for long multiplication and mental math, and many families learn the tables up to 20.
