Elementary math from kindergarten to 5th grade as a staircase of skills

Elementary math games for every grade

Elementary math games work best when they match the grade: children in the same grade learn the same things in the same order, give or take a few weeks. That is why the elementary math games on MathGym are also sorted by grade, from kindergarten to 5th grade. Each grade page lists what children learn that year in plain words, following the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, and links each skill to its game or worksheet where there is one. Pick the grade, press Play, and the mixed round asks the skills of that year. Looking for free math sites for elementary students? Every game here plays online, and the printable sheets are fun math activities away from the screen.

What each grade learns in math (short version)

  • Kindergarten: counting to 100 by ones and tens, numbers to 20, adding and taking away within 10, making 10.
  • 1st grade: addition and subtraction within 20, tens and ones, adding within 100 with tens, the clock to the half hour.
  • 2nd grade: all addition facts from memory, adding and subtracting within 100 and then 1,000, odd and even, arrays.
  • 3rd grade: multiplication and division facts, fractions as numbers, area and perimeter, time to the minute.
  • 4th grade: multi-digit addition and subtraction with the standard method, multiplying and dividing bigger numbers, equivalent fractions, decimals.
  • 5th grade: multiplying and dividing multi-digit numbers and decimals, fractions with unlike denominators, volume.

A note for UK families

In England children start Year 1 at age 5, about a year earlier than US 1st grade. So a US 2nd grader of 7-8 is about the age of a Year 3 pupil. Each grade page names the closest English year; for KS2 maths games (Years 3 to 6), open 2nd to 5th grade.

How to use the grade pages

Parents: open your child's grade, and look at the "what a child learns" list with the teacher's newsletter next to it. Pick the skill of the week and play one round a day. Teachers: the grade page is a fast way to show the class all games of the year on the whiteboard, and every skill page has worksheets in up to four versions. Tutors and homeschooling parents can follow the list in order and print a review sheet at the end of each skill.

Math games by grade level, free and safe

Every game is free, with no account and no ads inside the game. Progress stays in this browser, so a child who practices on the family tablet finds their stars again tomorrow. If your child is ahead or behind, simply pick the grade that fits them: the games do not check what grade a child is in. Curricula also differ a little between states and schools, so treat the lists as a guide, and follow your child's teacher when the order of topics is different in class.
