The 16 times table up to 16 × 12

The 16 times table is 16, 32, 48, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128, 144, 160, 176, 192. It goes past the 12 × 12 multiplication chart, so most schools do not require it: the Common Core stops at one-digit facts and England at 12 × 12. It is the 8 times table doubled, it turns up in measuring (16 ounces in a pound), and many families practice it with the other tables up to 20. The chart above has every fact, and "Hide answers" turns it into a quick self-check.

Multiplication by 16 as 10 + 6 or as doubling

Split 16 into 10 and 6: 16 × 3 = 30 + 18 = 48; 16 × 6 = 60 + 36 = 96. Or use doubling, because 16 is double 8: 8 × 7 = 56, and 56 doubled is 112, so 16 × 7 = 112. A child who likes doubling can even go from 2 to 4 to 8 to 16 times a number.

Ounces in a pound

There are 16 ounces in a pound. "How many ounces are in 3 pounds?" is 16 × 3 = 48. Some facts here are worth noticing: 16 × 9 = 144 is the same answer as 12 × 12, and 16 × 4 = 64 is 8 × 8.

16 times table games and worksheet

The trainer asks the 16 times table out of order with a keypad. The facts children mix up most are 16 × 7 = 112, 16 × 8 = 128 and 16 × 9 = 144 (102, 118 and 134 are the usual slips), so the game brings a missed fact back two or three questions later until it is right three times in a row. When the round feels easy, take the speed test and then the test for the diploma. The 16 times table worksheet prints 30 problems with the answer key on page 2, and the third sheet practices the trick.

A tip for parents

Practice the 8 times table first, then turn every 8s fact into a 16s fact by doubling. The 6 times table helps with the 10 + 6 split. Ask the facts the other way round too: 7 × 16 is the same as 16 × 7.

Not for the Common Core or the England curriculum, which stop at 12 × 12. It is useful extra practice for long multiplication and mental math, and many families learn the tables up to 20.
