5th grade math games for the last year of elementary
5th grade is the last year of elementary school in most US districts, and the math gets serious: multi-digit multiplication with the standard algorithm, division with two-digit divisors, all four operations with decimals and fractions with unlike denominators. The 5th grade math games here train the arithmetic behind all of that - fast multiplication and division facts and mental math - and the worksheets give the written practice, from powers of 10 to long division. Mathematics for 5th graders is a big step, and short, fun rounds online keep the daily part of it light.
What 5th graders learn in math
Following the Common Core, 5th graders write and evaluate expressions with parentheses, such as (3 + 5) × 2. In place value, they see that multiplying by 10 moves every digit one place to the left (3.6 × 10 = 36) and they read, compare and round decimals to thousandths. They multiply multi-digit numbers with the standard algorithm, divide up to four-digit numbers by two-digit numbers, and add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to hundredths. In fractions they add and subtract with unlike denominators (1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6), multiply fractions, and divide unit fractions by whole numbers. They also find the volume of boxes and graph points on a coordinate plane.
In England
A 5th grader (age 10-11) is the age of a Year 6 pupil in England, where children learn long division with two-digit divisors and take the end-of-primary national tests. The worksheets here also give maths questions for Year 6 practice.
Math games for 5th grade: facts, division and speed
The grade mix asks multiplication and division facts to 12 with a keypad. Powers of 10 and decimal problems are on the worksheets, and so is long division with two-digit divisors; mental math rounds train the quick sums that catch mistakes in long problems. MathGym does not yet have fraction games; the list above shows where they fit. Teachers can use the speed test as a five-minute warm-up at the start of a lesson.
Helping a 5th grader at home
At this age, many mistakes come from small facts, not from the big method. If long division keeps going wrong, run the mixed times tables speed test for a week. Ask your child to estimate before every long calculation and to check the result with the opposite operation. And let them teach you a method from class - explaining it is the best test. Keep the sessions short: ten focused minutes with a game and a few written problems are worth more than an hour of worksheets the night before a test. The review sheet, one page per skill, makes good homework for 5th graders, and everyday math activities like estimating the shopping bill keep the practice real.
Questions and answers
What math is taught in 5th grade?
Multi-digit multiplication and division, decimals to thousandths and their operations, fractions with unlike denominators, volume, the coordinate plane.
Do 5th graders use long division?
Yes, with two-digit divisors (Common Core 5.NBT.B.6), usually with strategies or the standard algorithm.
Are there decimal games for 5th grade?
Not as games: the worksheets cover decimals and powers of 10.
Is there a 6th grade page?
Not yet; MathGym covers kindergarten to 5th grade.
