Step by step
"Kindergarten math in four steps"
- Count: say one number for each thing, and the last number is how many (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 → 5 apples).
- See small amounts at a glance: dice dots and fingers up to 5, without counting.
- Make 5 and make 10: 2 and 3 make 5; 6 and 4 make 10.
- Add and take away within 10 with pictures: 3 apples and 2 more are 5 apples.

Kindergarten math games with pictures, not text
Kindergarten math is counting, comparing and the first sums, and children of 4 to 6 learn it best by seeing and touching, so good numeracy games for kindergarten look like play. These free kindergarten math games online use pictures, dots and fingers instead of words. The buttons are big, the numbers are friendly characters, and nothing goes wrong in a scary way: a wrong tap gives a gentle shake and shows the right answer. The same games work as preschool math games for younger children (pre-K and nursery), using the "Count to 10" and "Make 5" levels.
What children learn in kindergarten math
In kindergarten mathematics, following the Common Core, children count to 100 by ones and by tens, count objects to tell how many, write numbers from 0 to 20 and compare groups (more, fewer, the same). They add and take away within 10 using objects or drawings, know the sums within 5 by heart, and find the number that makes 10 with any number from 1 to 9. They also start to see the numbers 11 to 19 as ten and some more. In England the same ideas are in Reception (the Early Years Foundation Stage) and Year 1.
Addition games for kindergarten
The first sums are stories: 3 strawberries and 2 more. The trainer shows the strawberries, the child counts and taps the answer. When counting gets quick, the pictures turn into dots, then into numbers: this interactive step from things to digits builds number sense. Make 10 with dots trains the most useful fact family of all, the pairs that make ten.
How to play with your child
Sit next to your child for the first rounds. Say the numbers together, let your child touch each picture, and cheer for the strategy ("you saw 5 without counting!"). Five minutes is a good session at this age. Then print one of the fun math sheets for kindergarten - the "count and circle" sheet for number recognition or the ten frames - for a quiet moment at the table. Turning the sound on reads the question aloud, for children who can't read yet.
A tip for parents
The best counting activities for preschoolers need no screen: count steps, grapes, cars of a color. Ask "how many more to make 10?" with toys. Short, everyday number talk is fun math for preschoolers and does more in kindergarten than any worksheet.
