Addition and subtraction worksheets from kindergarten to 4th grade

These addition and subtraction worksheets follow the steps children take at school: easy picture sums and basic single digit facts within 10 in kindergarten (good as preschool addition worksheets too), facts within 20 in 1st grade, two-digit numbers within 100 in 2nd grade, and regrouping with two and three digits in 2nd to 4th grade. Every sheet is a free PDF with an answer key, and the generator above makes a fresh set whenever you need one, with the problems written in rows or, for regrouping, vertically in columns. For mixed addition and subtraction worksheets, print the within 100 sheet: 30 problems of both kinds.

Printable addition games

Some sheets are games. "Race to 20" is a printable addition board game for two players: roll a die, add, move, and land exactly on 20. Addition bingo practices facts within 20 for a whole class or a family evening. The addition chart 0-10 is both a reference and a puzzle: print the blank version and let your child fill it in, row by row, seeing that each row goes up by one.

Vertical problems on a grid

For regrouping (some schools say renaming), the sheets print the problems in columns on a light squared grid, so ones stay under ones and tens under tens. Many column mistakes are simply digits drifting into the wrong column; the grid prevents most of them.

Using the sheets well

Pick the sheet for the step your child is on, not the grade on the label. Let them play the matching game first (the related links below), then do the sheet alone and check it with the answer key. If one kind of problem keeps going wrong - for example subtraction across a ten - print that kind only from the generator. Teachers can print up to four versions of each sheet for a class.

Short and often

One sheet of 20-30 simple problems is plenty for a 1st or 2nd grader. Two short sheets on different days help more than one long sheet on Sunday, and a game round in between keeps the practice fun. Keep the finished sheets in a folder: looking back at the first ones after a month shows a child how far they have come.
