How to learn the 3 times table
The 3 times table is 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36. It is one of the first tables of 3rd grade (Year 3 in England), and children usually learn it right after 2, 5 and 10. The chart above shows every fact from 3 × 1 to 3 × 12. A good way in is skip counting: clap and count "3, 6, 9" until the list sounds like a song, then practice the facts out of order in the game.
Multiplication by 3: double and one more
Multiplication by 3 is "double, then add one more group". 3 × 7 is 7 + 7 = 14, plus 7 more = 21. For 3 × 8: 16 + 8 = 24. This works for every fact and gives a child a way to get an answer they have forgotten, instead of guessing.
The three facts to watch
3 × 7 = 21, 3 × 8 = 24 and 3 × 9 = 27 are the ones children mix up most. Point out that the turn-around rule helps: 3 × 8 is the same as 8 × 3, so learning one gives you two.
3 times table games
The trainer here asks the full 3 times table in random order with a keypad, so the child has to recall the answer, not pick it. When most answers are right, the speed test shows how many facts fit into 60 seconds and keeps the best score in this browser. All the games play online, and the test at the end is a 20-question 3 times table quiz for the diploma. The 3 times table worksheet has 30 shuffled problems and a second sheet with missing numbers (3 × ? = 24), which also prepares division: 24 ÷ 3 = 8.
A tip for parents
Make the 3 times table physical: a tricycle has 3 wheels, so 5 tricycles have 15. Draw the tricycles for the facts your child keeps forgetting, and stick the drawing next to the printed chart until the speed test shows those facts are fast.
