Learn the 2 times table by doubling
The 2 times table is usually the first one children learn, often in 2nd grade, because they already know the idea: doubles. 2 × 3 is 3 + 3, 2 × 8 is 8 + 8 = 16. The chart above lists the 2 times table from 2 × 1 to 2 × 12, and the answers are the even numbers 2, 4, 6 … 24. Counting by 2s ("skip counting") is the same list said out loud.
Multiplication by 2 in everyday life
Multiplication by 2 is everywhere: two hands, two shoes, pairs of socks, wheels on a bike. Ask "how many shoes do 6 children wear?" and the child is doing 6 × 2 = 12 without a worksheet. In 2nd grade the Common Core also asks children to tell odd from even numbers, and the 2 times table is the best way to see why: an even number is one you can split into two equal groups.
The facts that need a second look
The first five facts are easy. The ones that take practice are 2 × 7 = 14, 2 × 8 = 16 and 2 × 9 = 18, and later 2 × 11 = 22 and 2 × 12 = 24. They are the doubles from 7 + 7 to 12 + 12, so the addition doubles game helps here too.
2 times table games and a worksheet
Start with "Learn": it shows each fact as two rows of dots. Then play the trainer with four answer buttons, and when the answers come quickly, try the speed test or the gates runner. The 2 times table worksheet has 30 problems with the answers on page 2; the "Count by 2s" sheet is good for younger children. The test at the end works like a short 2 times table quiz, and every game runs online in the browser. Next stop: the 5 and 10 times tables, which are learned together with this one.
A tip for parents
Small everyday activities make the twos table stick. On the way to school, count things in pairs: eyes, hands, the wheels of two bikes. Then ask the fact backwards: "I see 14 shoes - how many children?" Going from 14 back to 7 is the first step towards division.
