The pattern of the 11 times table: 11, 22, 33 up to 99, then 110, 121 and 132

The 11 times table: an easy start, a tricky end

The 11 times table is 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, 110, 121, 132. The first nine facts are a gift: the digit appears twice. The last three need a moment of thinking, and that is where children slip (11 × 12 is not 1212). The Common Core asks for the facts of one-digit numbers, so the 11 and 12 times tables are extra in most US schools; in England they are part of Year 4, and they come up in the Multiplication Tables Check.

How to work out 11 × 10, 11 × 11 and 11 × 12

Use ten groups and a bit more. 11 × 10 = 110. 11 × 11 is one more 11: 110 + 11 = 121. 11 × 12 is two more 11s: 110 + 22 = 132. Another way: 11 × n = 10 × n + n, so 11 × 12 = 120 + 12 = 132. Both ways give a child something to fall back on instead of a guess.

A bonus trick for curious kids

To multiply a two-digit number by 11, split its digits and put their sum in the middle: 11 × 23 → 2, (2 + 3), 3 = 253. If the middle sum is 10 or more, carry the 1: 11 × 57 → 5, 12, 7 → 627. It is not on any test, but children love showing it to adults.

11 times table games

The trainer here asks 11 × 1 to 11 × 12 in random order with a keypad, so the "double digit" facts are fast and the last three get practice. Try the memory game for a calmer round, then the speed test and the 11 times table quiz, which checks all 11 times tables facts from 11 × 1 to 11 × 12. The 11 times table worksheet prints 30 problems with the answer key on page 2.

A tip for parents

If your child is in 3rd grade and still learning 6, 7 and 8, wait with this table. It is quick to learn once the others are solid, and it is a nice reward: "Now you know a table that most of your class hasn't learned yet."

Do kids need to learn the 11 times table?

The Common Core stops at one-digit facts, but many US schools teach tables to 12, and England requires them by the end of Year 4.
